The problem is not related to equality, freedom, or any system of justice. The problem has nothing to do with friendship, love, hate, morals, faith, government, or politics. The problem cannot be resolved by laws, constitutions, police, gods, bibles, or technology.

The cause has nothing to do with any group, organization, religion, country, or race. The cause, which exists at the individual level, has never been explicitly and properly identified, defined, and addressed.

Lenny Bergin was the luckiest man alive, but it wasn't luck that gave rise to his gambling success. Lenny amassed a fortune winning poker games and picking lottery numbers using some decidedly unethical methods. Lenny was constantly dodging retaliation from his victims. Though Lenny won more often than chance allowed, he wasn't really happy. He hated being alone, and finding someone who wasn't just interested in his money was nearly impossible.

The Shayla Love World Lottery changed everything. Winning a date with world-reknowned singer Shayla Love was Lenny's dream. She was smart, her songs were beautiful, her voice was breath-taking, and she was wealthy. Shayla wouldn't care about his money. Lenny couldn't wait to meet Shayla, and when he won the Shayla Love World Lottery he was certain his life would change for the better. Unfortunately, Shayla's life wasn't all that it seemed to be. When Shayla's ice-cold manager Barbadian Lech steals from her, Lenny uses every resource he has at his disposal to exact revenge.

Excerpt

Shayla held on to the curtain as Barbadian Lech walked out onto Prime Stadium’s main stage. One of the stage hands handed her a towel and she wiped her face and neck. Barbadian was acting brash, throwing his arms up and pumping his fists, exaggerated movements meant for the cameras. She hesitated behind the curtain. He turned to her and shot her a look that threatened dire consequences if she didn’t follow him out. She stumbled toward the center of the stage and the fans went crazy.

“Welcome to the greatest show you’ll ever see here at Prime Stadium,” Barbadian chanted to the screaming crowd. “It’s time to pick the winner of the Shayla Love World Lottery.”

A wave of hysteria erupted throughout the stadium as Barbadian pointed toward her. People were stomping in unison and screaming her name. Shayla felt dizzy. The stage rumbled under her feet, feeding the vertigo that was slowly overtaking her. She could no longer focus and still felt sick to her stomach. There was no way she could perform tonight. She was barely able to stand.

“Bring out the terminal,” Barbadian yelled.

Two scantily-clad girls rolled out a lottery terminal elaborately fitted with moving neon artwork surrounding a very large picture of her face. Above the picture was a green digital readout with six rapidly changing numbers. Barbadian stepped behind the terminal and held up his hands to quiet the crowd. The noise subsided a bit, though it was anything but quiet. Shayla's throat tightened up and sweat drained from her forehead and cheeks.

“And now,” he said, “for the moment you have all been waiting for. Let’s find out who our lucky winner will be. Let’s find out which lucky gentleman or lady will win a date with the one and only Shayla Love. Who will it be? The winning ticket number is…”

The whole stadium came to its feet as Barbadian slammed his hand down on an over-sized red button on top of the terminal. The terminal emitted a sequence of elaborate sounds that only she and Barbadian could hear. Then, one by one, the scrolling green digits stopped as the winning number was selected. The blinding stage lights spun around her. No longer able to hold herself upright, Shayla collapsed in front of the whole world.

Slaughterbend's Way

Doctor Becky Shannon is a brilliant nuclear physicist who may very well be able to avert Earth's catastrophic energy crisis and the Second Great Depression it was spawning. But when a stray asteroid turns out to be a spaceship that descends over North America, everything changes.

The event triggers global hysteria and propels the world toward economic and social collapse. Mayor John Anders not only has to deal with the loss of his fiance Becky Shannon, but gets unwillingly drawn into the government's attempt to find out what it is the aliens want with Earth. When a second alien ship arrives, there seems to be only one plausible way to avoid a fate that has already destroyed hundreds of planets.

Excerpt

John had rushed home yesterday afternoon after the sky lit up and his conversation with Becky was cut short. When he first turned the television on he had no signal, though within the hour some local service returned. Video transmitted by low-flying Royal Canadian Air Force pilots before they crashed didn’t show much but the satellite images sure did. While the images of the alien spaceship were stunning, all he could think about was Becky. He had gotten sick several times and was in the process of making himself a drink when he noticed the message on his answering machine.

“John. John. Are you there? This is Andy. I tried to get Becky to come with me, John. I tried so hard, but she wouldn’t listen. She was talking to someone but there was nobody there. She was saying something about radiation and not hurting people. I didn’t understand all of it. I could feel some kind of vibration in the air but I didn’t hear any voices. Anyway, I think it came right down on top of her, John. I’m so sorry. The Canadian Armed Forces are here. The RCAF is taking me someplace for questioning. I have to go. Bye.”

John hit the play button again. He’d already listened to the message dozens of times but he kept playing it over and over again. He didn’t want to believe what he was hearing. Each time he played it he listened for something he might have missed. It was bad enough that Becky was going to be away from him every week. Losing her forever was more than he could handle.

Blisko Rover

California's traffic jams were already among the worst in the nation. When Ernie Blisko starts selling the fifty million dollar Blisko Rover California's highways become deathtraps. With no regard for other drivers, owners of the indestructable Rovers crush any vehicle that gets in their way.

Dan Mangene is trying to get home at the end of a long day when he has a close call with a Rover. An hour later he isn't so lucky when a Rover lands on his car while he's stuck in traffic. Dan miraculously survives thanks to help from what he believes is an angel. Little does Dan know that the 'angel' that saved him is the only hope Earth has of stopping Ernie Blisko and the Rovers.

Excerpt

Dan’s car suddenly shook as though someone had kicked it. It shook again. In the mirror he could see a Rover leaping from one spot to the next as it made its way toward the overcrowded bridge. Cars were being crushed with each landing and it was quickly getting closer. Another hop brought the Rover frighteningly close and it looked like Dan might be sitting in the next landing zone.

Dan opened his door just as a van skidded between Dan’s Leviathan and the car to his left. The van jammed itself against the Leviathan, pushing Dan’s door shut. The driver was an elderly woman and she was waving her arms around and screaming hysterically. She hopped out of her car, continuing to wave and scream. The Rover was about to jump again.

Dan panicked. He would have to get out on the passenger side. He scrambled in his seat, trying to get his long legs out from under the steering wheel. The Rover left the ground and disappeared from view. Dan cried out as he threw himself across the passenger seat. Lying flat on his back he had just managed to unlatch the passenger door when the inside of the Leviathan suddenly filled with suffocating blue smoke.

An angel with long white hair poked his head through the smoke. The angel had milky white skin, large black eyes, and a small nose and mouth. Dan couldn’t breath and started choking violently. While the angel was a riveting sight Dan had no time to waste. The shadow of the Rover darkened his car. He pushed the passenger door open and kicked wildly but it was too late. He wasn’t going to make it. He’s come to take me to heaven Dan thought, passing out as the roof buckled above him.
